No mission has reached ʻOumuamua, 2I/Borisov, or 3I/ATLAS. Everything we know comes from observing them at a distance: their motion, their light, their chemistry, and the traces they left as they passed.

What would we learn to recognize if we could finally study one up close?

THE NOVEL

The Fourth Visitor begins when a fourth interstellar object enters the Solar System and humanity decides to reach it. The encounter ends in a world-threatening catastrophe. In the aftermath, an international team uncovers something that makes the catastrophe part of a much larger pattern.

To understand what they have found, the team turns to 140 years of real-world observations. Those observations were not created for the novel. This site opens that record: the scientific papers, historical documents, and active disputes behind the book's central lens, all real and linked so you can follow them for yourself.

For the intended experience, it's recommended reading the book first. Then look them up.

THE RECORD

Before the three, the sky had already left a photographic record.

Before digital cameras, observatories photographed the sky on glass plates. A glass plate worked much like photographic film: light from the sky left an image that astronomers could preserve and examine later. Those plates, together with survey logs and later instruments, preserve 140 years of observations made for other reasons. A few recorded something once, and never again.

    The Old Flashes Changed with Space Weather

    Transient detections on old plates became steadily rarer as geomagnetic storms strengthened, then returned when the storms passed.

Pattern

NO SINGLE OBSERVATION ANSWERS THE QUESTION.

Some predate satellites. Some behave like reflected light. Some are distributed as though Earth's shadow mattered at the altitude where our satellites now orbit. Some change with geomagnetic conditions in near-Earth space. Some appear once and are never recovered.
